Description:
Producer Gordon Raphael recounts the discovery and recording of Regina Spektor’s Soviet Kitsch. Initially reluctant to record during a planned vacation, Raphael was captivated by Spektor’s unique musicality, demonstrated in her performance of "Poor Little Rich Boy". He employed unconventional techniques, such as using nine microphones to create a punk-inspired sound for her piano and voice. For tracks like "Us", Spektor worked with string quartets in London, where Gordon ultimately replaced an initial quartet due to tuning issues, resulting in stunning arrangements. Raphael's innovative methods and Spektor’s artistry culminated in a groundbreaking album that showcased her distinctive style.
