Interviews
Totally Jewish
December 23, 2004

Description:
Regina Spektor, a Moscow-born pianist and singer-songwriter, has become a prominent figure in New York’s anti-folk scene and is set to make 2005 her year. After moving to the Bronx at age nine, she rediscovered her Jewish heritage and studied classical piano under Sonia Vargas, despite her family’s financial struggles. Her big break came when The Strokes invited her to open for their U.S. tour, followed by a duet, Modern Girls and Old-Fashioned Men. Her third album, Soviet Kitsch, blends elements of folk, jazz, klezmer, and rock, earning her comparisons to Norah Jones and Tori Amos. Spektor’s distinctiveness, musical depth, and unapologetic embrace of her Jewish heritage make her poised for lasting success.
