Call Them Brothers

Description

"Call Them Brothers" is a song originally composed, performed, recorded, and released by Regina Spektor featuring Only Son (Jack Dishel). One of the few guitar-based Regina Spektor songs, it is always played as a duet between Regina and her husband Jack. A chamber version of the song entitled "Call Them Brothers (featuring Regina Spektor)" was first released on Jack Dishel's second LP Searchlight on 2011-01-18. A music video for this version, this time released by Regina Spektor was released on 2012-05-10. A new version of the song, entitled "Call Them Brothers (featuring Only Son)", was released on the deluxe edition of the LP What We Saw from the Cheap Seats on 2012-05-29. This version of the song was rerecorded, lacking the chamber instrumentation and featuring an acoustic guitar intro. The rerecorded version would go on to be featured as a b-side to the single "You've Got Time", released on 2013-07-05.

"Call Them Brothers" was likely first performed at the restaurant Bobo in New York City in early 2010, though the exact date is not known. The song was performed a number of times in 2010 and 2011 then extensively in 2012 and 2013 in support of the release of What We Saw from the Cheap Seats. "Call Them Brothers" was not performed again until its last performances in 2019 in support of Regina's Broadway residency, being performed at four out of five shows.

Lyrics

Anything we should know about your change?
That's it, it's split it won't recover
Just frame the halves and call them brothers
Find their fathers and their mothers
If you remember who they are
Over and over they call us their friends
Can't we find something else to pretend?
Like nobody's won and we're safe at the end
In the darkness the film machine's spinning
So let's leave it on
We'll be out in the street
before anyone knows that we're gone
That's it, it's split, it can't recover
Just frame the halves and call them a whole
And chip at the bricks and fill up your pockets
With the pieces of the wall that you stole
The hunt is on, everyone's chasing
Everyone's chasing a shot
A shot rings out, nobody wants it
Nobody wants it to stop
That's it, it's split, it won't recover
Just frame the halves and call them brothers
Find your fathers and your mothers
If you remember who they are
If you remember, if you remember,
if you remember who they are
