Lyrics

The day the world ended
Was a bad day anyway
God was playing games upstairs
He was playing chess

"Checkmate, my friend," he said
"Oh, checkmate, my Hiroshima
Checkmate, my sweet mud"

I can see the cradle
Only lonely me
I can see the cradle
Only lonely me
Oh my, oh me, oh my

The day the world ended
Was a bad day anyway
God won the tournament
He beat us fair and square

"Checkmate, my friend," he said
"Oh, checkmate, my Hiroshima
Checkmate, my sweet mud"

I can see the cradle
Only lonely me
I can see the cradle
Only lonely me
Oh my, oh me, oh my

Fire, fire everywhere
No one left to say a prayer
Fire, fire everywhere
So they bent their heads in prayer
As the game board went up in
Purty little flames, uh-huh
Purty little flames, uh-huh

The day the world ended
Was a bad day anyway
Owners and distributors
Had smoked their last cigar

"Checkmate, my friend," he said
"Oh, checkmate, my Hiroshima
Checkmate, my sweet mud"

I can see the cradle
Only lonely me
I can see the cradle
Only lonely me, oh my

The day the world ended
Was a bad day, a bad day anyway
The lovers and philosophers
Had known it all along

"Checkmate, my friend," he said
"Oh, checkmate, my Hiroshima
Checkmate, my sweet mud"

I can see the cradle
Only lonely me
I can see the cradle
Only lonely me, oh my

Fire, fire everywhere
No one left to spare
That wouldn't be fair, now
Would it, oh and
Fire, fire everywhere
No one left to say a prayer
Fire, fire everywhere
So they bent their heads in prayer
As the game board went up in
Purty little flames, uh-huh
Purty little flames, uh-huh
I can see, oh me oh my
I can see
I can see
I can see
I can see...
