The New Colossus

Description

"The New Colossus" is a cover of a Emma Lazarus poem performed by Regina Spektor. Regina first performed this poem at the Edinburgh Playhouse on 2017-08-03. Regina would go onto to recite the poem for the S01E12 episode of PBS series Poetry in America entitled "The New Collossus", which aired on 2018-04-01. During this episode, Regina recited the poem twice, first set to the music of "Après Moi" and again to the music of "Obsolete".

During the performance at Sydney Opera House on 2018-07-09, Regina again performed "The New Colossus", noting that she wanted to "say hi to this harbor with New York harbor" by performing the poem.

Lyrics

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
